Services are available for persons 18 years and over who have, or are at risk of having, a genetic disorder. This includes continuing care for those diagnosed with a genetic condition in childhood, genetic testing and counseling for adult-onset diseases, and family history of a genetic condition.

Genetic testing of children for adult-onset conditions is typically not medically necessary. We can provide medically accurate information about the genetics of these diseases. Our office does not routinely perform genetic testing for healthy children with a family history of adult-onset disease.

When a referral to the genetics clinic is made, a three-generation family history, including both sides of the family, is the cornerstone of a genetic evaluation. This helps provide answers to the referring physician’s questions and may reveal other genetic issues within the family tree.

Most health insurance plans cover outpatient genetics consultations with referral order and prior authorization (if needed). For purposes of care coordination, we routinely request a referral from your/your child’s primary care provider.

Tourette syndrome is a disorder of the nervous system that causes repetitive tics (uncontrolled, repetitive vocal sounds or muscle jerks that happen suddenly). Mild symptoms can begin in children as early as 5 years old and include repeated blinking of the eyes or blurting out unusual sounds.

Early detection and treatment, which includes observation, bracing or surgery, provides better outcomes for patients. We offer the region’s only program for deformity corrections such as scoliosis for kids and have the only pediatric orthopaedist in the region for spine deformity.

Carilion Clinic’s orthopaedic surgery team provides treatments for hip pain with the goal of decreasing pain, slowing the progression of degenerative hip disease and restoring normal hip function. This early intervention should reduce the risk for premature arthritis and hip replacement surgery later in life. Athletes who use repetitive motions in the hip joint, such as dancers or adults who were diagnosed with hip dysplasia as children, are candidates for hip preservation procedures.

The Crippled Children's Ward was constructed on top of the Flickwir Memorial Unit as an isolation ward for polio victims. It opened in June, 1945. Included was a roof area where patients could take sunbaths.

In 1949, the name of Roanoke Hospital was changed to Roanoke Memorial and Crippled Children’s Hospital because of the public misconception that the hospital was owned by the City of Roanoke. The suggestions of generous citizen contributions of the past (Memorial) and the work done on behalf of children with polio Crippled Children’s) were coupled together to create the new name.

The polio epidemic pushed the hospital to a breaking point during the summer of 1950. People who had been on the road for days, came from remote southwestern locations to Roanoke. At right, Dr. Olin Melchionna examines a polio patient.

Hospitals throughout the U.S. began deleting diseases and afflictions from their names, so the hospital was renamed Roanoke Memorial Hospital (RMH). However, the hospital remained dedicated to treating children and crippling diseases.

They received a diploma and “graduation robe” (actually a t-shirt that had “Life Continues” across the front). The celebration included a cake shaped like the hospital. The top says "Happy birthday baby graduates of 1980."

The Medical Center for Children was created in 1991 after the merger of Roanoke Memorial Hospitals and Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley. Its official name was Children’s Medical Center of the Virginias (opened April 9, 1991). It had a specialized Emergency Department. There was a medical staff of four physicians, one specializing in pediatric cardiology. A pediatric pulmonologist was added that summer.
